Fifth part Brickwork Cardigan Diary
-------------------------------------
13/3/22
is it concerning that, instead of going on, after two rows I rather search for tasks I usually loathe to do?? 😹
ok, let’s do some more Dark
—
edge is a little bit wriggly, so left long tails and worked some single crochets - barely noticeable, and once the edges get their finish, it will be hidden under the sewing sling stitches - pictures 1), 2)
Correct faults like this immediately, so in the next rows you can incorporate the repair-stitch
——
second front finished! Still don’t like to work this yarn, but must admit it gives a lovely spongy texture
-noticing once again how much of the cat’s hair (and mine, too) is woven into the fabric - very good method to top up the supply 👻
——
forgot that I was watering the plants - cat drinking the stream I created - fortunately didn’t use any pesticides so far this spring - pictures 3), 4)
——
now even done some rows of the back; there is an end in sight 😅
-------
-------
16/3/22
2 days passed and no progress, made decision not to work on it as long as the sun isn’t out (lazy me 😚) but it makes no sense to do one row and then discover that I’d made a mistake; and when working inside, my Mohair allergy comes knocking at the door swiftly. Or maybe it’s not the material, just that the mites prefer to live in more hairy wool ?
Do you experience something like that?
-------
-------
19/3/22
finally nice weather with decent sun so can crochet outside 👻
did some rows of the upper back - two more good days and it will be done!!
-anyway, belt definitively will be in 'normal' single crochet, can’t bother with the pattern much longer
-------
-------
20/3/22
some more rows, one good day and body should be finished definitively
-did a piece of the belt, incorporating the colour-swatch (all the others are not the right size so will be frogged) picture 5)
-much easier to do ‘normal’ single crochet in both of the top loops, but still having trouble with the edges where I can’t feel it and don’t see where I put the hook into - however, this can be levelled sewing it together, and after all it’s on the back side
-no need to weave in the tails, they will be inside and the edges sewn anyway
-passed twice with loose sewing sling stitches - taking care to take in edges only and not the fabric on the other side, as this would disturb the elasticity - picture 6)
-belt backside will be fixed lightly to front side, when it’s finished, every 15 or so cm, each with a separate piece of yarn, just to be sure that the back stays at the back
-like the bell bottom effect, caused by the thicker yellow Mohair - it mirrors the effect on the cardigan itself 👍🏽 picture 7)
-will do 100cm in dark approx., then use up colours left after making collar
——
-actually, single crochet goes pretty fast; reconsidering decision to use yarn only for knitting in future, as texture with crocheting is great and not too stretchy

1) irregularity in edge -

2) - correct it with some single crochets, in the coming row there will be 1 sc more

3) better here than from a plant saucer

4) new fashion of artificial waterfall - water bill soaring 🐾

5) swatch incorporated in belt - it had a dark row from the beginning, so only have to go on crocheting on the other side

6) two passages with sling stitches

7) nice bell-bottom effect

———————————————-

Weaving-in-the-ends-as-you-go (in case you work with a new thread in every row, from right to left )

———————————————-

As each row in our cardigan is worked with fresh yarn, you have many many loose ends and might want to weave them in while working the same (right edge) row, or, on the left, the one of the row before.

Pictures 1)- 10) show how to do it. Always try to weave in alongside as many stitches as possible, at least 5 or 6, the more the better (as long as this does not disturb the picture of the pattern). Before cutting the yarn always stretch the part of the fabric where you have woven in, in order to keep inside as much thread as possible.

----

Now, for the perfectionists amongst you, or if you work with slippery yarn - you could, before each stitch, sling the loose end over the supply yarn and then under it, creating a twist. This way you can be sure it never will slip out again.

On the left edge this is not possible (or at least I haven't yet discovered it ), you can either choose the method described in Blog 4/N (to follow soon) or weave in with a needle.

----

Instead of weaving in, on the right edge you can also work your first stitches with supply yarn and loose end doubled up, pictures 11) - 19).

On the left edge this is possible but very difficult, as you would have to calculate which yarn length you need until the end of the row, so let's leave this to super perfectionists 😎

1) Left edge: stick the hook through the loop in which you intend do to your sc with weaving in - at least 6 stitches before the end, the more the better

2) place the loose end of the row before on your hook between the loop in which you do the sc and the yarn supply and catch the yarn supply

3) pull through under the loose end

4) catch the yarn supply again over the loose end and pull through both loops on the hook, finishing your sc

5)work the following sc all the same way

6) should you still have a bit of the loose end yarn at the end of the row....

7) pull the loose end. You will learn quickly how to place it evenly / end of left edge description weaving in

8) Right edge: same principle as with left edge, but with the loose end of the current row - catch supply yarn under the loose end and pull through. For a more secure grip, twist the loose end thread around the supply yarn

9) catch again over it and finish sc

10) looks like this on the back / end of right edge description weaving in

11) Right edge:  instead of weaving in, if your pattern and yarn allow it, you can work some stitches with supply yarn and loose end doubled up

12) do your right edge stitch as you like, using single or double thread for the chain - here it's used double

13) for the first sc, catch the double yarn

14) and pull through - you have now 4 (3 in case you chose to do the chain with single yarn)) threads on the hook

15) flip the loose end away and catch the supply yarn only, pull through and finish the sc

16) for the next sc you do the same: pull through with both threads, but finish it only with the supply yarn

17) results in slightly thicker stitches

18) but the top has only single yarn. do as long as you wish and your pattern visually isn't harmed, but do at least 4 stitches.
19) back sight, you now can cut the loose end
