Different techniques to do the left edge in crochet
——————————————————————————————
These are the ones I find most useful generally, and they are all easy.
Exact explanation with the pictures
-
Left edge
La) - you leave the loop of the single crochet edge stitch, and in the next row you incorporate it in your left edge stitch, pull to tighten the loop, then leave the new loop for the next row - this one gives the neatest edge, but it is not very elastic, see pictures
Lb) - you add a chain to the edge stitch, then cut the yarn and pull it through, see pictures ….- gives a very secure but loose and uneven edge that has to be corrected when weaving in the ends. Weaving them in upwards into the back of the next row gives a more even picture, you can use the weave-in-as-you-go method, weaving them in downwards into the same row, not tightening too much gives a zigzag effect, but must be done with a needle.
Lc) - you just finish the left edge single crochet, cut the yarn and pull it through - this results in a very loose edge, you have to take care in the next row not to pull out the end with the edge stitch, and you have to weave the ends in carefully with a needle and back stitches - not suitable for weave-in-as-you-go.
If you finish your row with a double crochet, the left end stitch will be a single crochet anyway!
