Shades of dark red vs. MARSALA / in English/Deutsch/Italiano

As discussion about the 'color of the year' in posts and comments of Fashion Blogs has become hot, I'd like to write an "editorial' about it. Yes, I'm the senior (and only...) editor of my blog, so I dare doing it ;-)))))

One just has to type 'PANTONE DARK REDS' on Google to understand that there are DOZENS OF SHADES of the color.
This season's 'fashion' MARSALA is just one of them, and in reality it's a BROWNISH RED and not even a dark one.
It's nearly impossible to show the right shades of red in amateur pictures, and frequently not even  fashion magazines show the correct ones either.

Can't say that I'm a big fan of dark reds, although - or maybe because - it was used a lot by old Ladies in my youth. It was regarded as a posh but difficult color, to combine only with grey, or crème bow-tie blouses.
Anyway, I kept a lot of pieces in my 'sleeping' wardrobe, especially in the shades that go into pink. Seeing it everywhere now I quickly re-accustomed and discovered that it combines well with all kinds of vivid and pastel colors.

What we all regard as MARSALA now, in reality are all the beautiful GLOWING VARIATIONS of VINE, BURGUNDY, ROSE RED, ARKANSAS (yes, found the name on Pantone!), RUBY, VELVET, POMEGRANATE, STRAWBERRY (it's healthy, too ;-)))) ...........
So don't let us be influenced by judgements of others, that nearly never regard the shade we actually have in mind - let's just pick out our favorite one, call it Marsala if we like to, and don it whenever we want!!!!

Because the real Pantone MARSALA nobody would use for an outfit - it's just right for a BLUSH!!!!

Ho tenuto alcuni pezzi, sopratutto quelli tendenti als rosa.

Red garments look different in between my phone and Portable, although both are i-photo!!!
So here I try to use the picture that most resembles the original shade - anyway, you might see it differently on your PC.

This is another suede skirt I kept, and I styled it together with my very own Etienne Aigner bag from the early '1980, much used then - it looked so 'adult-, stored away for more than 30 years, darkened a little since then (because of cleaning it with vine shoe polish), but the right thing for this moment.

By the way, we called the shade 'Cartier color' back then :)))

  19. I personally feel that this colour is wayy too overhyped! I mean, as much as I love reds, I won't be able to stand everyone wearing red this year!! It's an eyesore! And red often represents anger...so there's that! I honestly wished they chose a nicer colour like emerald green or smth!! Haiz!! But love your skirt babe, and love the way you styled it!!

  34. I don't know why this color is so hotly discussed. I know some people either hate it or love it. I don't particularly mind it and I for one can think of two colors I would wear with it. It is not that bad of a color in my opinion. Maybe because in my field, I am task with using the most god awful colors and making them just work LOL. Love this post and thanks for sharing your thoughts and outfit :).

  63. psychology plays a great part in how we view colours, when some word becomes fashionable we tend to use it more often and so it is with Marsala. I've noticed that when burgundy was really popular, people would comment on my burgundy pieces- that really weren't burgundy at all.
I've seen some fashion editorials that show Marsala in range from pink to red:)

As you have pointed out, it is really hard to view a colour perfectly via photographs or even recordings. Lights plays funny tricks:). Maybe we would be more correct to talk about 'marsala inspired' colours because that exact shade won't always be the same, even if it is used by many designers.
