Boulcé Fabric Coat with Sequins / Mantel aus Bouclé-Stoff mit Pailletten / Cappotto di tessuto bouclé con paillettes

I love ankle-length clothes since I was a teen, when 'midi' 'became modern, and on a still not fully grown girl it was longer than intended.

Still remember my first two coats of this type - one in black off my aunt's wardrobe, 1950', with tight body and flared lower part . It was my first 'adult' piece.
The second one I received for Christmas, and it was an even greater wonder: A-line Betty Barclay  with tight body, and a short cape over it, trimmed with fake fur. Nobody else in my school had a coat like this, and I felt so proud! ;-)

Many of you will not know, but these were the days when children received special clothes only for Christmas and Birthdays, plus things knitted or tailored by your mother, grandmother or aunts. I was lucky because allowed to raid the wardrobes of items in disuse of all three - think that's when my love of Vintage was born. They had so many amazing 50'clothes!!! No older things, though, because the war had left over absolutely nothing in the area where I was born.

My 'special' aunt adapted them all for me. And after ten years of making clothes for my Barbie (yes, single, even the 'rich' girls had just one, and maybe a Ken :)) I started handcrafting for myself, and soon had to claim the storeroom behind mine for lack of space. Another aunt presented me with her old sofa, armchairs and low table - 50' too - and I felt like a princess in her vast castle :lol

Gone are those days, and I only remember them now, while thinking of a story to tell.
It started with me wishing to post several flared skirts on the theme of red. Putting them together I decided immediately to wear a 50' radial pleated tiered tartan flannel one.
Over it came a recently acquired coat - of black bouclé fabric with sequins, which reminded me of one in my mother's wardrobe which I never was allowed to wear because it was new.

                      ---------------------------------------------

  19. Hello Rosa, I love the story you shared! I think that even our style evolves during our lives, our early memories often have a big impact on our future preferences. I didn't have a luck to discover many vintage pieces in my house, as my mother is a bit too young to have them (she gave me a few items she used to wear in the 90s, but that's all) and my grandmothers unfortunately didn't have the habit to keep beautiful old clothes. So I often heard stories about their pretty dresses or fabulous fur coats but when I asked where those pieces were, I was told that they got rid of everything during cleaning their closets.
And it's such a shame; I'd love to see those clothes not only to wear them myself, but also because it would give me a clue what kind of women my grandmothers once were :)

    1. Hello Joanna, yours is a story I often hear, because the 80' and 90' were really prosperous years in Europe with no need to keep things no more modern, and Vintage as a mass movement was born later. I'm much older than the average blogger, think the age of your grandmothers, and they surely had to wear adapted things as children as in post war Europe there wasn't available a lot. When I started to have my own money I too threw away many things I would like to have now. But there's something positive for you, too: too much past is a burden sometimes, one clings to ideas no more practical. You on the other hand are free from clichés in your choices, living in the now, with no bonding ties to a past that doesn't exist any more. Anyway, if you have the chance, ask for old pictures and listen to stories of the past (maybe on a stormy winter evening ;-)) before it's too late. This could fortify your roots and give you a better idea of times past.
      :)))

    2. I think your theory is very likely to be true. When I talked to my grandmothers (and even my mother) they all agreed that in the years of their childhood they often had to be very creative when it comes to their wardrobes and often make clothes themselves. It's hard to believe know, looking at all the shopping centres filled with tons of clothes. So when they eventually had the possibility to buy what they wanted, they'd shop like insane and almost change the whole wardrobes every season. When I first asked them about their old clothes back at high school, they couldn't even understand why someone would like to wear old pieces, when you could go to the store and buy something brand new.
But I think you're right that sometimes one is better without too much past!
When it comes to listening to stories, I did and I certainly will do it again :) I think many people underestimate that today.
      Kisses
      Joanna
